In scripture, people stack rocks as memorials to commemorate significant events and demonstrate God’s faithfulness. Joshua 4 describes the Israelites stacking twelve stones from the Jordan River as a memorial after crossing on dry land. These stones served as a reminder to future generations of God’s miraculous intervention.
As I sat watching one granddaughter sitting on water’s edge, I’m wondering what must be going through her head, what must she be contemplating. And the other two were splashing and laughing in the creeks water. They found a spot that was deep enough for them to go under, finding treasured underneath the deep and finding joy in just being. I find myself grateful to be there, in a place so serene and peaceful. With beauty all around us.
This is a creek close to home. My family goes there frequently, to get away from the noise of the outside world and relish the stillness that is simply there for our joy. Truly grateful.
So this day, I am here alone with the three grands, watching them. And I’m grateful.
Rocks, lots of rocks of many sizes and colors lay around me and I think of scripture when it talks about God’s people stacking rocks as reminder for a variety of reasons.
I ask my grandson to gather some rocks and start stacking them. He asks me “why?” and I tell him because it’s a symbol that I’m grateful for this place. And tell him that God’s people in bible times stacked stones as a practice to create physical reminders of God’s actions and faithfulness. And it’s a reminder of God’s presence, promises and guidance. He said, “Oh, okay” and started stacking.
I know the next time the waters rise, the stones will be dismantled but that just will give us reason to go build another reminder.
This is not so much different than me as a person. I am a reminder of God’s promises and goodness yet life hit’s me and I may lose footing. Yet God is there to calm the outside world for me and my feet become firm in Him again.
What is your symbol of His goodness? What are your feet standing firm on? If you don’t know Him, Please reach out to your local church or myself. I would be honored to walk that path with you.
Rhonda
